The Missouri Democrat was a Pro-Union, anti-slavery, Unconditional Unionist newspaper published in the slave state of Missouri. The articles cover the slavery debate, secession crisis, and political and military issues. Articles are transcribed, modernized, footnoted, and include explanatory notes to help contextualize the articles. Maps and pictures are added to help the reader visualize the information provided. A timeline, keyed to the articles, a finding aid section, and an index are also provided.

Series Sampler

This introductory Sampler offers selected excerpts from each of the fourteen series in the Missouri Speaks Collection. The collection ultimately comprises more than 70 volumes containing transcribed Civil War–era newspapers, primary-source documents, and government reports related to Missouri during the conflict.

The volumes are generally organized in chronological order, allowing readers to follow events as they unfolded. Additional volumes are arranged by subject matter or by the officer or official associated with the documents, providing focused perspectives on particular people and issues.

The Sampler provides readers with an opportunity to explore the scope and content of the collection and serves as a convenient guide for identifying the volumes that may be of greatest interest.
